The first recognizable social media site was created in 1997. It was called SixDegrees. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. Well that was the big bang of it all. A birth of a new parallel universe. 20 years later, we now have Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Snapchat. Very useful and fun tools to use for personal and professionals means. But this is just the beginning.
So I can’t really lie to you and tell you here are 9 books you should read and you’re going to master content marketing. We’re still researching and developing new ways and techniques to create and share cool content. You can’t really go to school for this. Its something we just have learn together which I think is the exciting part of the job. With that said I highly recommend reading a book every two weeks (that’s my magic number), because these things are changing constantly, and you want to be educated, informed and updated all at the same time.
- Everybody Writes: Your Go-To Guide to Creating Ridiculously Good Content by Ann Handley. Its one of my favorite books about putting together creative content. Its definitely the go-to guide when starting out. Ann is an expert in the field and if you like her work she will be speaking at Social Media Marketing World 2016.
- The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users by Guy Kawasaki and Peg Fitzpatrick. Kawasaki is a Silicon Valley marketing executive, and Peg is a social media blogger and strategist. The book is a practical guide to using social media. Guy will also be speaking at Social Media Marketing World 2016.
- Guerrilla Marketing: Easy and Inexpensive Strategies for Making Big Profits from Your Small Business by Jay Conard Levinson. Guerrilla Marketing is promoting products and services in an unconventional way with little budget to spend. As a small business, that’s all you will be doing online. The book discusses other ways of Guerrilla Marketing not just online, but its a must read.
- Ignore Everybody: and 39 Other Keys to Creativity by Hugh MacLeod. Here are couple ideas this book can offer: “The more original your idea, the less good advice other people will be able to give you” and “a big idea will change you”. There are a plenty more tips in the book. An easy read, packed with illustrations made by the author himself.
- Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin. This is Seth’s most critically acclaimed book. I’m pretty sure you’ve read this already but it’s worth mentioning.
- Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us by Seth Godin. Its another book by this marketing guru. In this online universe tribes are just social media networks. So to succeed we need an idea, a leader and we need each other.
- The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell. You might ask why is the Tipping Point on this list. It was written in 2000 and its a sociology book. I personally feel Malcom Gladwell predicted in this book a lot of our current trends and habits. Its a very interesting read that shows how good ideas are created and how people react to them.
- Show Your Work: 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered by Austin Kleon. A really fun book, for people who don’t think self-promotion is fun. Full of good ideas to make your sharing process easier. The book also contains illustrations and drawings that work like infographics and make your reading experience more interesting.
- The Open Brand: When Push Comes to Pull in a Web-Made World, by personal development: One of the few Online Branding books out there. Small and packed with very useful information. The book is considered to be a wake-up call to companies trying to manage their brands the old-fashioned way.
There you have it. That’s a list of books you should be familiar with. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna have to update this post in the next few months. For the time being, do some reading and some reflecting and feel free to suggest some of your favorite social media marketing books in the comment section.
Show Your Work is one of my favorite books 👍
