“Do I need a blog?” Or even better, “Do I really want a blog?” is in my experience the most asked question when creating a new website for someone. Most people want to mention having a blog but ironically its a topic they want to avoid discussing. That’s simply because most people understand the importance of having a blog, but fear the obligations of maintain it.

Yes your gut feeling is right. You want to have a blog. Now that you know you need a blog, all these questions are racing through your mind: Do I have the time? What would I talk about?  Do I want to share this much information with everyone? How can I promote this blog? What if nobody is reading it? Who’s this content monster everyone is talking about?

The answer to these questions varies on the type of business you run. My advice to get you going, is to make a schedule, and stick to it. You don’t have to post content everyday. Just be consistent. Once you get the hang of it, it’ll be something you look forward to do.

Now let’s talk about the whys. Here are ten reasons why you should have a blog. To make this little bit more fun, I’m going to name these ten reasons after Daft Punk songs:

  1. Beyond SEO – The more relevant content you’re posting on your website, the more traffic you would get.
  2. Harder, Better, Faster, Smarter – If you want to call yourself an expert in your field you probably need to do constant digging online and offline. You will be a student again. Always looking for new information and new ways of doing things.
  3. Human After All, so be interactive – Its a two way communication process. The easier you make it for your customers to be heard, the more engaged they would be with your business.
  4. Doin’ it Right and being cool – You’re engaging your customers. You walk people through your process. You ask customers for feedback. How cool can you get.
  5. Get Lucky and go viral – Every-time you post something online, you spin the wheel of fortune. Maybe one of your posts will be shared all over the interweb overnight.
  6. Too Long to stop – Your perseverance will help you get noticed and gain the respect of others in your community. In addition to that, the more you do it, the easier it gets. The easier it gets, the more effective you become.
  7. Instant Cash. Your blog will help you get more leads and generate more sales.
  8. Something About you. Share your full story. It’s a fascinating tale. With its ups and downs, twists and turns. For more on the topic, please read my previous post.
  9. Within free PR. Business bloggers are often interviewed as industry experts.
  10. One More Time you’re gonna feed The Content Monster. To stay alive in the web, you have to feed the monster. Its a scary thought, that you can’t stop. The monster always wants more. You have to post, renew and update content constantly.

I can’t stress enough the importance of having a blog on your website. Especially if you’re a small business. A blog to your website is the oil to a car (Unless your car is a Tesla). This system of content marketing is not going anywhere anytime soon. Its this simple, as a small business, you are required to create and distribute relevant content on a regular basis to drive profitable customer action. Now that you know what to do, shine like a like a star and share your story, Around The World.
